Community Fun – 2016 Manhattan Beach Pumpkin Race

By Keith Kyle

One of the great features of life in Manhattan Beach is the small town feel.   Manhattan Beach is a true community and never is this more apparent than around the holidays.  Now that our many summer events are over it’s time to get into fall holiday mode and an upcoming event that’s always a great time is the Manhattan Beach pumpkin race.

What is a pumpkin race you might ask?

It’s exactly what it sounds like with teams building a racecar out of their pumpkin with the equipment provided in the pumpkin race kit.  Teams design their pumpkin race cars and then race down pier avenue.  This event happens on October 23rd from 12-5 pm at the Manhattan Beach pier and pier avenue.  To sign up visit the Manhattan Beach Pumpkin Race website.

Good Times at the 2015 Surf Festival

By Keith Kyle,2015 Surf Festival Manhattan Beach

One of the highlights of summer in Manhattan and Hermosa Beach is the annual Surf Festival.  Only in the South Bay can a festival include events such as the pier to pier swim (between Hermosa and Manhattan piers), surf contests, lifeguard competions and relays, paddle surfing, body surfing competition, sand castle competion, beach running races and the highlight of the event which is the Charlie Saikley 6 man volleyball tournament.  Always a fan favorite, the 6 man tournament offers both mens and women’s brackets with levels going from the “just out having fun” to teams composed of current and former pro volleyball players.  To add to the festive atmosphere many/most of the teams dress up in various costumes including the WWF team (that puts a wrestling ring around their half of the court), to the Lakers 2015 Surf Festival Manhattan Beachcomprised of former pros and even former LA Lakers.

In addition to the variety of competitons for adults, there are also a number of competitions for kids.  This is one of the most entertaining events of the summer.

Known as the “international surf festival” it truly is a global affair with athletes and lifeguards coming from as far away as Australia to compete.

Downtown Manhattan Beach – Small Town Charm at the Beach

By Keith KyleDowntown Manhattan Beach

There are endless reasons that make Manhattan Beach such a unique and special town, and certainly one of them is the small town charm.  As with any good town, the heart of the city is located in the downtown shopping and dining area.  Only this town center sits just steps from one of the nicest beaches in the world and it’s hard Evening in Downtown Manhattan Beachnot to be amazed and dazzled by the location.  With a variety of restaurants both casual and fine dining, sports bars to catch the games, a boutique and hip hotel and shops for just about everyone, downtown Manhattan Beach really epitomizes the casual yet elegant feel of the city itself.  In addition to the abundance of activities in the center of the city, just a short walk down the street leads you to the sand of world famous Manhattan Beach as well as the Manhattan Beach pier, Roundhouse Aquarium, and the bike and walk paths of The Strand, Manhattan Beach’s oceanfront walk.

Approval of the Manhattan Village Mall Expansion Project

Manhattan Beach, CA (December 3, 2014) – After almost nine years, extensive community input and thoughtful open discussion, the Manhattan Beach City Council approved, in a 3-2 vote, the Manhattan Village Mall Expansion Project at their December 2, 2014 Council meeting.  The City Council approved an option which included approval of Phases 1 and 2, and deferred Phase 3 (Fry’s corner) for future public review and input.

Phase 1, 50,000 square feet, is comprised of the Village Shops surrounding the California Pizza Kitchen building.
Phase 2, 60,000 square feet, includes the consolidation and expansion of Macy’s.  Additional conditions added by the City Council included the following:

  • Maintaining the Phase 1 North Parking Structure as ground plus 2 levels of parking (G + 2), with level 2 setback 90 feet;
  • Installing interim landscaping and signage at Sepulveda and Rosecrans;
  • Installing 30 additional parking spaces adjacent to 3500 Sepulveda in the culvert with pedestrian access leading directly to 3500 Sepulveda; and

Manhattan Beach Holiday Fireworks 2014

Nothing brings the community together more than a party with fireworks.  Mix in the beach, music and a festive atomosphere and you can’t Holiday-Fireworks-Manhattan-Beach-Piergo wrong.

As the official website MBFireworks.com declares:

 “The Holiday Fireworks have, over an entire generation, become part of the very heart and soul of our community. The annual event started as a way for local business leaders to kick-off the holiday season, and give something back to Manhattan Beach. The deed has flourished – and this spirit of sharing is nowhere more apparent than here, as quoted from the  “If you want to feel a sense of community, there is nothing like the annual Manhattan Beach Holiday Fireworks show. It’s as if the entire town comes to the pier to see the show and see their neighbors… By the time the sun sets and the fireworks explode, the merriest people in the world …are probably the people sitting on Manhattan Beach Boulevard, wrapped in blankets and gazing into the night sky.” So come out and join me as we once again soak-in this great event and create new memories with family, friends and neighbors.
